Palaces, Forts and Elephant Rides!

Up again at 4 AM. Too much to do, so little time.

Hawa Mahal is a pyramid shaped structure is made up of small casements, each with tiny windows and arched roofs with hanging cornices, exquisitely modeled and carved, making it more like a screen than a palace. It was build at a time when ladies of the royal household observed very strict "pardaa". This unusual palace, with its screened balconies provided them with an opportunity to watch processions and other activities on the streets without being observed themselves.

Its top three stories are just a single room thick and at the base are two courtyards.

Amer Fort, officially spelled Amber Fort, is situated about 10 km from Jaipur on Jaipur-New Delhi road. It has just been recently listed as a World Heritage Sites of UNESCO. Amer was the capital of old Dhundar state of Jaipur and was governed by Kachawaha rulers. The town was originally named Ambikeshwara and was later abridged to Amber or Amer.
